Best RPGs for Beginners: Accessible Starting Points in Every Subgenre
Welcoming starting points in every RPG subgenre, from JRPGs and CRPGs to action, open-world and tactical games, with platforms and difficulty notes.
“Where should I start?” is the most common question new RPG players ask, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you enjoy. A great first RPG is one that teaches its systems clearly, offers difficulty options or forgiving design, and represents its subgenre well enough that you know whether you want more. Below are recommendations for each major branch of the genre, with the reasons they suit newcomers, release years and platforms as of October 2026. We avoid prices, which change constantly.
If you are unsure which subgenre fits you, our guide to starting an RPG and our RPG glossary are good companions to this list.
What Makes an RPG Beginner-Friendly?
We used a few simple criteria to choose the games below:
- Clear teaching. The game introduces its systems gradually, with tutorials or tooltips, rather than assuming you already know the genre.
- Forgiveness. Difficulty settings, generous saving or design that lets you route around obstacles, so a single wall does not end your playthrough.
- A self-contained story. No prior entries are required to understand what is happening.
- Representative design. Each pick shows what its subgenre does best, so enjoying it is a good sign you will enjoy similar games.
- Availability. Every game is playable on current hardware without hunting for old consoles.
“Beginner-friendly” does not mean “easy” or “simple”. Several of these games are deep and long, and one of them, Elden Ring, is famously demanding. What they share is that a newcomer can understand them, make progress and grow into them.
JRPGs: Story-Driven, Turn-Based Adventures
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition
Original release: 2017 (Japan). Definitive Edition: Nintendo Switch (2019); PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (2020).
If you want the classic JRPG experience in its most polished form, this is it. Combat is traditional turn-based, enemies are visible on the field so you can avoid fights, and the story of a young hero branded a villain is easy to follow while still delivering big emotional moments. The Definitive Edition adds a 2D retro mode for players who prefer a classic look. Character designs come from Akira Toriyama.
Why it suits beginners: clear goals, readable menus, no reflex pressure and a self-contained story that needs no prior knowledge.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
Released: November 14, 2024, for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
A shorter, retro-styled alternative. It modernizes the 1988 classic with HD-2D visuals, the blend of pixel-art sprites and 3D environments, and lets you create your own party from classes. It is a good way to see why the series shaped the entire genre.
Persona 5 Royal
Released: PlayStation 4 (2019 Japan, 2020 worldwide); Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on October 21, 2022.
A stylish modern JRPG that combines dungeon crawling with daily life as a Tokyo high school student. Turn-based combat revolves around hitting enemy weaknesses for extra turns, which is easy to learn and satisfying to master. It is very long, so it suits players who want one big game to live in for months.
CRPGs: Choices, Dialogue and Tactics
Baldur’s Gate 3
Released: Windows on August 3, 2023; PlayStation 5 in September 2023; macOS in September 2023; Xbox Series X/S on December 7, 2023.
The most celebrated CRPG of the modern era and a surprisingly friendly introduction to the style. It adapts Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition rules, but the game handles all the math for you, combat is turn-based so you never have to rush, and every line is voiced. It offers multiple difficulty settings. Its reputation for reacting to player choices is earned; it won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023 and at all five major award ceremonies.
Why it suits beginners: turn-based pacing, extensive tooltips, adjustable difficulty and a story that reacts to whatever you try.
Divinity: Original Sin II – Definitive Edition
Released: 2017 on Windows; later on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (2018), macOS (2019), Nintendo Switch (2019) and iPad (2021).
Larian’s earlier game is a great alternative, especially for friends: it supports story co-op for up to four players. Turn-based combat uses action points and elemental surfaces such as water, oil and fire, which encourage creative experimentation. Its six “origin” characters give you a pre-written hero with their own story if you do not want to build from scratch.
Action RPGs: Real-Time Combat With Depth
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
Released: the original Remake on PlayStation 4 in 2020; Intergrade on PlayStation 5 and Windows in 2021, and on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S on January 22, 2026.
A hybrid of real-time action and an ATB gauge that lets you pause to choose spells and abilities. That makes it more forgiving than a pure action game while still feeling dynamic. It covers the opening Midgar section of the 1997 classic and is the first part of a trilogy, so it is a good choice if you want a cinematic, character-focused action RPG.
Elden Ring
Released: February 25, 2022, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
A challenging game, so why recommend it to beginners? Because it is the most flexible entry point into the soulslike style. If a boss is too hard, you can ride your horse, Torrent, to another region, gain levels and return. Spirit Ashes let you summon allies in many boss fights. It has no difficulty settings, but its open structure acts as one. Players who enjoy action games and want a sense of hard-won mastery will find it one of the most rewarding games of its generation.
Open-World RPGs: Freedom to Explore
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Released: 2011, with re-releases including the Special Edition (2016), Nintendo Switch (2017), the Anniversary Edition (2021) and Nintendo Switch 2 (December 2025).

Few RPGs are as easy to pick up. There are no classes to choose: your character improves whatever skills you use, so you can experiment freely. Difficulty can be adjusted at any time, and the world is full of places to explore without following the main quest. It is available on essentially every current platform.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Released: May 19, 2015, for PlayStation 4, Windows and Xbox One; Nintendo Switch in 2019; PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in December 2022.
A mature, story-rich open world with a defined hero, Geralt of Rivia, whose quests are famous for their writing and moral complexity. It offers several difficulty levels, with the lowest designed for players focused on story. Combat is real-time and takes some getting used to, but the narrative pull carries many newcomers through. Its expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, are widely praised.
Tactical RPGs: Strategy on a Grid
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Released: July 26, 2019, for Nintendo Switch.
Strategy battles mixed with life at a military academy, where you teach and bond with students before war breaks out. It is ideal for beginners because of two features: Casual mode, which revives fallen units after each battle instead of losing them permanently, and Divine Pulse, which lets you rewind a limited number of turns per battle. Your choice of house shapes the story, which adds replay value.
Triangle Strategy
Released: Nintendo Switch on March 4, 2022; Windows in October 2022; Meta Quest VR in 2024; PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on August 20, 2025.
A political tactical RPG in the HD-2D style, notable for its “Scales of Conviction”, where party members vote on major decisions and you can persuade them beforehand. It added difficulty options after player feedback on its demo, making it more approachable than many classic tactics games.

How to Choose Among Them
- Do you prefer stories or systems? Story-first players should look at Dragon Quest XI S, The Witcher 3 or Final Fantasy VII Remake. System lovers may prefer Divinity: Original Sin II or Fire Emblem.
- Do you enjoy reflex-based games? If not, choose turn-based options; if yes, try Elden Ring or Final Fantasy VII Remake.
- How much time do you have? Most of these games run for dozens of hours. If you prefer shorter sessions, the HD-2D Dragon Quest III or Triangle Strategy break neatly into chapters.
- Do you want to play with a friend? Divinity: Original Sin II and Baldur’s Gate 3 both support co-op.
Whatever you choose, remember that difficulty settings, guides and breaks are all fair tools. The best first RPG is the one you keep playing.
